Corps of Discovery Corps of Discovery is an extra-curricular activity available to any seventh or eight grader in our school. To participate, a student commits himself to researching a topic and writing a 2000 word paper on a subject of personal interest. The papers are judged after completion, and special medallion awards are presented to the students whose papers were judged "best". Presentations are made at an awards banquet with family members present. In the spring, Corps of Discovery members participate in a three day, regional educational and entertaining fieldtrip, which is paid for by the students' fundraising efforts. Fieldtrip destinations have been to Seattle, Victoria and Vancouver, British Columbia, Olympia, Mt. St. Helens and the San Jaun Islands. The trip in 2004 was to Vancouver, British Columbia. Origin of Corps of Discovery Name: In 1803, President Thomas Jefferson established the Corps of Discovery after the Louisiana Purchase was made. The Corps of Discovery was led by Meriwether Lewis and William Clark. President Jefferson instructed Meriwether Lewis: "The object of your mission is to explore the Missouri and other rivers to the best water routes across the continent. Captain Lewis, other object worthy of your notice will be the soil and face of the country, it's growth and vegetable production. Get well acquainted with the people you meet.take great pains to see that the measurements and records you keep are correct and complete. LEARN ALL YOU CAN!!" |
